The pièce de résistance to every Chicago Style Hot Dog? Celery Salt of course! To many Chicagoans, this seasoning is considered the essence of the gods, delivering a memorable flavor to every dish it touches. It just wouldn’t be a Chicago Style Hot Dog without this seasoning. That’s why we’re so excited to give you the 4-1-1 on Celery Salt today, as well as introduce you to some new uses for the condiment.
Even if you’ve never heard of Celery Salt before, chances are you have had it in a dish before without even knowing. It’s actually a very common seasoning and can be found in recipes all around the country.
Celery Salt is made by grinding table salt with celery seeds. This process creates a seasoning that has a bit of zip and adds a salty finish to dinners, drinks, and more. As the name suggests, Celery Salt adds a Celery-like flavor to dishes, instantly giving whatever dish you add it to additional depth and flavor. However, on its own, Celery Salt is rather mild, so it is rare you will find it as the star of any dish, but rather an accompaniment to other seasoning blends.
Of course, if you’re familiar with Celery Salt at all, you know one of the most popular uses for the seasoning is a Chicago Style Hot Dog! If you’re looking to think outside of the box, however, here are some other great uses for it:
- In a Bloody Mary, as featured in our Bloody Mary kit
- On Buttered Corn on the Cob
- Sprinkled on top of Potato or Egg Salad
- In a Chicken Noodle Soup, or your other favorite broth-based soup recipe
- Savory Popcorn Seasoning
