When veteran food service operator, Peter Zougras opened Poor Boy in 1987, he had hopes of building a lasting family business. That’s why his son Spiros has been so dedicated to the legacy that his dad bestowed on the family. Since a young boy growing up in nearby Westchester, Spiros has been learning and honing his restaurant skills.
Poor Boy continues to be a community based restaurant while serving Vienna Beef hot dogs and polish sausage. They also serve beef sandwiches, gyros, salads and Italian subs to make up their infamous menu. Together with cousins Tasos and Costa, Spiros continues to greet and satisfy first, second and, even third generations. They are in a great location on the corner of 1st Avenue and Roosevelt. People on their way to Brookfield Zoo and other nearby attractions are able stop in and enjoy their menu.
Now, it’s Vienna’s turn to thank and congratulate Spiros, Tasos, Costas and the memory of Peter Zougras in welcoming Poor Boy of Maywood into the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame. From all of us at Vienna, we wish Poor Boy continuing success.
Back in 1984, Bob Houpy began selling hot dogs and other sandwiches in Melrose Park, Illinois. Two years later Bob partnered with his brother Joe and cousin John Bocian. They opened a second location in Cicero. In ’93 they opened the Berwyn Store, and now a fourth spot in Broadview.
Bob was born and raised in the same area where Lucky Dog was founded. This helped solidify great customer service, product integrity, and a sense of community for three decades and counting. Every employee is like family. Many have been there since day one. Customers range from first to second to third generations.
Each restaurant features their famous gyros, burgers, and a variety of specialty sandwiches. Of course there are always Vienna Beef hot dogs, sausages and deli meats. After three decades it’s now Vienna’s turn to thank and congratulate the family and staff. We welcome Lucky Dog into the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame! From all of us at Vienna Beef, we wish you all the best now and in the future.
Even in Chicagoland, man does not live on hot dogs alone, which explains why James and Robert Peplowski, started Peppo’s in 1976 as a submarine sandwich business that also featured their Vienna Beef hot dogs and more. Peppo’s is active in local communities, and puts people at the heart of its business. Peppo’s has been celebrated on WGN’s Chicago’s Best and the Mancow Show, and in numerous newspaper and magazine articles over the years, and can even claim Frank Thomas as a fan. Vienna is proud to include Peppo’s among the deserving members of The Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame.

Twenty Five years ago, John and Chris Karabotsos discovered a boarded up Tastee Freese ice cream shop in Chesterton, Indiana, and knew that it would be a great neighborhood to make friends and sell Vienna Beef hot dogs and some great gyros. Over the past quarter century they have dedicated themselves to the business of building customer relationships both old and new; from those early days in Chesterton and continuing with their more recent times in Hobart.
With all of the changes over the years, John and Chris’ goal has always been to “keep serving high quality food with A-Plus service” while keeping the operation running simply and smoothly. Like many true hall of famers, all of their employees have made an impact on their success. John says, “The first thing I tell a new cashier when I hire them is that they are the Director of First Impressions”.
They continue to serve great food to third generation customers, in addition to new ones all the time. As proud as the Karabotsos family is of their business, Vienna agrees for what they have accomplished and welcome George’s Gyros into the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame.
