Carm’s Snack
1057 W. Polk
Chicago, IL. 60607
Dear Mary and Steve,
Part of the charm of today’s hot dog stand icons is tracing back it’s roots to those thrilling days of yesteryear. In the case of Carm’s Snack, those roots trace all the way back to the 1930’s and a little grocery store that made and sold Italian ice, as well. Started by Mary Fontano, the family changed the name of the place to Carm’s, named after Carmella, their Grandmother’s daughter, and converted the place to a hot dog stand when UIC opened in the area in the early sixties. In 1979, the place was sold to Mary Fontano Devivo, keeping it in the family, and together with son, Steve, have maintained the Carm’s tradition ever since.
For nearly a half-century now, people from this Little Italy neighborhood and the students at UIC, recognize Carm’s for its great Chicago style foods including Vienna Beef hot dogs and polish sausage and the outrageously good homemade meatballs, Italian beef and wonderful Italian style subs.
And now. It’s Vienna’s turn to acknowledge, congratulate and welcome Carm’s to the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame. Their long-standing dedication to quality and community are certainly recognized. We extend best wishes and much continued success from all of us at Vienna.
