In the late Eighties, when the Lukas family set up shop in the Detroit burbs, the education process began to make new believers of the Chicago style hot dogs. Nearly twenty years later, Hippo’s Hot Dogs has become a major part of the fast food scene and has not only gained the praise of their customers (the ultimate test); but has also garnered many awards. Voted best hot dog by the Detroit Free Press and Detroit Monthly Magazine among others. Hippo’s has also been the enthusiastic subject of many news articles and television features, as well.

Featuring a variety of Vienna Beef hot dogs and polish sausages, in addition to an array of Italian beef and sausage, meatballs and their unique specialty sandwiches; Hippo’s drags it through the garden with all of those famous Chicago style condiments including the hot giardineira and sport peppers. The Lukas family has also developed a huge and respected catering business, and has recreated a niche in the Detroit metro area that has been a long-standing food service tradition to Chicagoans for some time.
